Former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton dismissed North Korean leader Kim Jung Un’s talk of having a nuclear launch button ready as nothing more than “propaganda.”
Bolton’s comments came on a Monday appearance on Fox News Channel’s “Fox & Friends.”
His remarks were in response to a speech by the North Korean leader, who had said “the nuclear button is always on my desk.”
“Well, look it is propaganda from Kim Jung Un,” Bolton said. “This is his regular New Year’s speech. And obviously he has seen the conversation in the United States that looks at possible preemptive military force– not as the most attractive option. But it’s an option we definitely have to use if they don’t give up their nuclear weapons program.
“So, we need a very careful calibration exactly what the north’s capabilities are. I think they have made incredible advances in the past year. They are very close to crossing the finish line. But they haven’t done it yet. And if he has the nuclear button on his desk, maybe he could give us a copy, too.
“But he said North Korea is trying to buy additional times to “perfect: its targeting system and “be able, at some point, perhaps in the next year, to be able to hit targets in the United States with thermal nuclear weapons.”
He said President Donald Trump “has very little time left to make a decision what to do or face a future where North Korea has nuclear weapons.”
